高賀神社の創建は奈良時代・養老年間（715〜717年）にさかのぼります。都の人々が夜空に怪しい光を見つけ、その行方を追うと高賀山麓に到達し、神を祀ったのが始まりとされます。
平安時代には、頭が猿・体が虎・尾が蛇の妖怪「猿虎蛇（さるとらへび）」が現れ、朝廷の命を受けた藤原高光がこれを討ち、神社を創建しました。境内にはその退治の場面を表現した迫力ある木像が建っています。

Koga Shrine’s origins date back to the Nara period (715–717), when people in the capital saw a mysterious light in the night sky. Following its path led them to the foot of Mt. Koga, where they enshrined a deity.
In the Heian period, a monster called “Sarutorahebi” (head of a monkey, body of a tiger, tail of a snake) appeared. Fujiwara no Takamitsu, under imperial orders, slew the beast and established the shrine. The grounds now feature a striking wooden statue depicting this legendary battle.

2. 円空記念館 – 円空仏と歴史

高賀神社に隣接する円空記念館には、江戸時代の僧・円空が彫った仏像が約30体展示されています。
一木から三体を彫り出した「一木造り三像」や、晩年の「歓喜天像」など、多様な作風を鑑賞できます。館内は撮影禁止ですが、温かみある木肌や力強い彫り跡が印象的です。施設の方がとても丁寧に説明をしてくださいましたよ！

Adjacent to Koga Shrine, the Enku Memorial Hall displays around 30 Buddhist statues carved by the Edo-period monk Enku.
Highlights include the “Three Statues from a Single Log” and the later “Kangiten” statue. Photography is prohibited inside, but the warm texture of the wood and vigorous carving marks leave a lasting impression.

3. 高賀渓谷 – 清流と緑の楽園
Koga Valley – Paradise of Clear Streams and Greenery

高賀神社から少し下ると、高賀渓谷が広がります。川底まで見える透明な水と、両岸に広がる深緑が特徴です。
夏は涼を求める人で賑わい、秋は紅葉が美しい景勝地として人気です。川沿いの遊歩道を歩き、岩間を流れる水音を聞くと心が洗われます。

A short drive downhill from Koga Shrine brings you to Koga Valley, where the water is so clear you can see the riverbed, framed by lush greenery.
In summer, it attracts visitors seeking cool relief, while in autumn, it’s a renowned spot for vibrant foliage. Strolling along the riverside and listening to the water flowing between the rocks is truly refreshing.

周辺には名水を汲める「高賀神水庵」や、インスタ映えスポット「モネの池」もあり、ドライブにも最適です。

Nearby attractions include the “Koga Spring Water House” where you can collect pure spring water, and the Instagram-famous “Monet’s Pond.” The area is also perfect for a scenic drive.
