Four Divine Beasts Tour in the Chubu Region

先日、等身大「ガメラの着ぐるみ像」と「ミニチュアの町」がある公園が話題となりましたそこでは『特撮ごっこ』が楽しめるというわけです
その際『日本人ってペンギンが好きって言われているけどカメも好きだよね～』という話になりました
『いや、もともと中国発祥の『四神』も『玄武』がいるくらいですからね～』
『あ～なるほど　この辺にも『四神』と所縁の深い土地ってあるんでしょうかね？』
ということで調べてみました

Recently, a park featuring a life-sized Gamera suit statue and a miniature town set became a hot topic.
During the conversation, someone said, “People often say Japanese love penguins, but we’re pretty fond of turtles too, aren’t we?”
Another chimed in, “Well, there is Genbu, one of the Four Divine Beasts from ancient Chinese mythology—that’s a turtle, after all.”
“Oh, right! I wonder if there are any places around here connected to the Four Beasts?”
That’s what got me curious, so I decided to do a little research.

東西南北を司る四神（青龍・白虎・朱雀・玄武）。

その思想は風水や都市設計に色濃く影響を与え、今でも日本各地に痕跡を残しています。

今回は中部地方でその「四神の面影」を感じられるスポットをめぐる旅をご紹介します。
The Four Divine Beasts—Seiryu (Azure Dragon), Byakko (White Tiger), Suzaku (Vermilion Bird), and Genbu (Black Tortoise)—govern the four directions in East Asian cosmology. Their influence is deeply rooted in feng shui and city planning. Here, we explore places in Japan's Chubu region where traces of these mythical protectors still linger.

🔹 有松（愛知県名古屋市緑区）
Arimatsu, Nagoya City, Aichi

東海道の宿場町として栄えた有松。町の作りには、東に川（青龍）、西に旧街道（白虎）、北に丘（玄武）という風水的要素が揃っています。絞り染めの町並みを歩きながら、自然と調和した都市設計に触れられます。
Once a thriving post town along the Tokaido, Arimatsu's layout reflects feng shui elements: a river to the east (Seiryu), an old road to the west (Byakko), and hills to the north (Genbu). As you stroll through its traditional shibori-dyed streets, the harmony of nature and human design becomes evident.

🔹 松本城とその城下町（長野県松本市）
Matsumoto Castle and Castle Town, Nagano

国宝・松本城を中心に広がる城下町は、東に田川（青龍）、西に道（白虎）、北に山並み（玄武）、南に田園（朱雀）という構成で設計されたとする説も。近世の都市設計にも風水が影響していたことがうかがえます。
Centered on the national treasure Matsumoto Castle, the town's layout reflects feng shui principles: Tagawa River to the east (Seiryu), roads to the west (Byakko), mountains to the north (Genbu), and farmlands to the south (Suzaku). This shows how feng shui influenced early modern urban design.

🔹 久能山東照宮（静岡県静岡市）
Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, Shizuoka

徳川家康を祀るこの神社は、まさに四神相応の地。南に駿河湾（朱雀）、北に日本平の山（玄武）、東西に山道（青龍・白虎）があり、風水を強く意識して建てられたと言われます。社殿の荘厳さと共に、地形にも注目です。
Dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, this shrine is located on an ideal feng shui site: Suruga Bay to the south (Suzaku), Nihondaira hills to the north (Genbu), and flanking paths to the east and west (Seiryu and Byakko). Its geography and magnificent architecture are equally awe-inspiring.

🔹 郡上八幡の町割り（岐阜県郡上市）
Gujo Hachiman Town Planning, Gifu

清流・吉田川に沿って形成された郡上八幡の町。川が流れる東（青龍）、山々が囲む北（玄武）、旧街道が通る西（白虎）など、自然と調和した町割りに風水思想の影響が見られます。郡上踊りで有名な風情ある町です。
Formed along the pristine Yoshida River, Gujo Hachiman reflects feng shui concepts: river to the east (Seiryu), mountains in the north (Genbu), and an old road to the west (Byakko). The town, famous for its Gujo Odori dance, exudes historical charm.

🔹 金沢・兼六園の意匠（石川県金沢市）
Design of Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa

兼六園には直接「四神」を祀るわけではないものの、庭園の石組みや池、築山などの配置に風水思想の影響があるとされます。金沢城の築城にも、東西南北の配置を意識した設計がなされています。
Though Kenrokuen Garden doesn't directly honor the Four Divine Beasts, its rock arrangements, ponds, and artificial hills reflect feng shui influence. Kanazawa Castle's design also considered directional orientation based on this ancient philosophy.

Shrines and Sites Inspired by the Four Divine Beasts

◉ 京都・船岡山周辺（玄武）
Kyoto – Around Funaokayama (Genbu)

船岡山（京都市北区）は、かつて平安京の北を守る「玄武」としての象徴的存在でした。
Funaokayama in Kyoto’s Kita Ward was considered a symbolic representation of Genbu, the Black Tortoise, guarding the northern boundary of the ancient Heian capital.

◉ 京都・東福寺塔頭「霊雲院」
Reiun-in Temple at Tofuku-ji, Kyoto

枯山水庭園「四神相応の庭」があり、庭師・重森三玲が四神を石と苔で表現しています。
Reiun-in, a sub-temple of Tofuku-ji in Kyoto, features a karesansui (dry landscape) garden known as “Shijin Sōō no Niwa,” or the Garden of the Four Divine Beasts, designed by famed gardener Mirei Shigemori.

◉ 大阪・四天王寺
Shitenno-ji Temple, Osaka

「四天王」を祀る寺院ですが、その伽藍配置は四神思想の影響を受けたとも言われています。
Though dedicated to the Four Heavenly Kings, the layout of Shitenno-ji Temple is believed by some scholars to have been influenced by the spatial philosophy of the Four Divine Beasts.

◉ 東京都文京区「根津神社」
Nezu Shrine, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo

拝殿前の狛犬の代わりに、青龍・白虎・朱雀・玄武の彫刻が配されています。
Instead of the typical guardian lion-dogs (komainu), carvings of Seiryu (Azure Dragon), Byakko (White Tiger), Suzaku (Vermilion Bird), and Genbu (Black Tortoise) can be found in front of the main hall at Nezu Shrine.
