1. What is Tamaya? A Local Favorite with Giant Portions
Located along the approach to Nittaiji Temple in Kakuozan, Nagoya City, Tamaya is a well-known eatery loved for its hearty portions. Even a “regular” order is enough to surprise first-time visitors with its sheer size.

2. Today's Craving: Katsu-Don!
Today, I came with one mission: enjoy a glass of beer with some delicious katsu-don. Tamaya’s pork cutlet rice bowl is their signature dish, and I couldn't wait to dig in.
▲ Tamaya’s handwritten menu – katsu-don is always a standout choice.
3. "Small" Set? Looks More Like Extra-Large!
I ordered the “small” katsu-don set meal – but when it arrived, I laughed. It looked anything but small! The portion was enormous, and it came with additional fried items on the side. A generous feast disguised as a “light” meal.
▲ The so-called “small” set. Don’t be fooled – this is huge!
4. Katsu and Beer – The Perfect Combo
Pairing crispy cutlet slices with a cold beer? Absolute bliss. The katsu-don had a light and gentle flavor, with a well-balanced dashi broth that kept things refreshing until the very last bite. I felt like all my hard work today paid off in this one perfect moment.

5. Kakuozan: A Temple Street Full of Charm
Before or after your meal at Tamaya, take time to explore the Nittaiji temple street in Kakuozan. This stone-paved path leads directly to the historic Nittaiji Temple, shared by all Buddhist sects in Japan. The approach is lined with charming cafes, traditional shops, pottery stores, and seasonal stalls. On weekends, it transforms into a relaxing stroll filled with the scent of incense and sweets, attracting both locals and tourists alike.
6. Final Thoughts: Comforting Flavor, Full Belly
Tamaya may be famous for its big servings, but the taste is anything but overwhelming. Gentle, dashi-rich broth and tender pork make each bite pure comfort. I couldn’t help but say out loud, “Ahh... that was delicious!”
